Problem
In addition to affecting the economy as a whole, COVID 19 has also affected the construction industry significantly. The pandemic caused authorities to impose restrictions to contain the spread of the virus, which resulted in the closing of construction sites, suspension of contracts and more severe cancellations.
The effects of this reduced economic activity on the construction industry have been a reduction in raw materials available, an increase in raw material prices, and a diminution of skilled labour as skilled workers moved to alternative employment opportunities to meet their daily requirements.
Furthermore, in Canada, the rate at which employed persons are retiring is greater than the rate at which new job entrants can be trained to replace the skilled exodus. Consequently, 90% of companies report a skills shortage in most skilled trades, and 75% report difficulty in recruiting skilled labour. The impact on the residential property industry is the delay of projects, increased overtime pay, recruitment costs, and training to upskill staff.
Due to these increases, as well as the cost increases coming from the COVID 19 Pandemic, the construction industry has had to find alternatives to curtail the steep rise in construction costs.

Company Overview
Harveen Sidhu – the CEO, grew up being involved in the construction industry through his family business. He then went to University and later started his own general contracting construction company.
After building residential projects in various cities for 8 years, Harveen noticed the lack of innovation in this space. He then started to research more efficient building methods and decided to launch a prefab steel framing company in 2017.
Since late 2017, Build Smartr.com has constructed 4 homes and numerous sheds, and office space.
Looking to the future, Harveen sees the business growing revenues exponentially and having multiple manufacturing locations throughout North America.
