Problem

Despite unprecedented global growth, the current employment market for companies in Life Sciences is challenging. High-quality, recently qualified graduates are having difficulty obtaining employment in the sector. As some companies have indicated informally, available jobs sometimes require more specialized knowledge and training such as in business development or in regulatory processes and issues. In other cases, there is a divergence between the education and skills of graduates and the actual needs of companies. 

Although university graduates entering the Life Sciences industry will have studied a classic, knowledge-based, science curriculum they most probably would not have received the industry-specific knowledge and skills that they require in order to secure employment in the workplace. Industry and academia have different mindsets and goals and Life Science graduates do not possess adequate skills to meet all industrial requirements. Students need to be exposed to more practical experience apart from theoretical knowledge. As the world is becoming more and more professionally competent, it is paramount to enhance the professional standards of graduates to make them competent and confident employees. 

How can we empower the next generation of young scientists to get the job of their dreams? Scientists in academia may be highly successful, dedicated, and innovative, but translating skills developed in an academic setting to an applied profession continues to be a challenge.

Solution

To ensure a globally competitive sector and one that builds on a position of strength, the Life Science Industry needs to develop a pipeline of talented and skilled employees.  It sets out how, in the context of global markets, there is a dire need for better acquisition of industry-specific knowledge and skills. Life Sciences employers will attract, retain, train and develop the research, manufacturing and technical skills required by this dynamic and diverse sector.

The Life Sciences sector involves biomedical science, engineering, computer science, data analytics, chemistry, physics and mathematics working in close partnership with clinical research and high-value manufacturing expertise. The aim of Pharmuni is to provide top quality, flexible, affordable, and accessible on-line training for students moving into the Life Sciences industry and to create partnerships with universities.

The U.K. Science Industry Partnership (SIP), in conjunction with the Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry (ABPI) and the Bioindustry Association (BIA), developed the Life Sciences 2030 Skills Strategy. The report states that the Life Science Industry has the potential to create 133,000 new jobs in the next 10 years and that digital and computational skills, statistical literacy, leadership, and inter-disciplinary working are essential to its continued success.

The report recognizes that one of the drivers of change in the Life Sciences sector and skills is the change in attitudes to learning;

In 2020 COVID-19 created sudden dramatic shifts in how we lived, how we worked, and how we learned. Almost two years later, we are still feeling the impact of the pandemic in our daily lives. Some of the changes, hastily made in response to stay-at-home orders, still exist in some form in our workplaces and schools—and will likely continue to do so for a long time. Not all of these changes have been positive, but, in the case of remote learning opportunities, it has allowed for more enthusiastic adoption, advances in technology, improved user experience, and increased visibility and appreciation of the power of this form of learning and training.

E- learning has gone from being an often-overlooked, and even unappreciated, option in the learning and training community to the norm for many learners around the world. E- learning provides a focused experience for learners that allows them to concentrate on their own work in a flexible, adaptable environment without added external pressures. This dynamic form of learning and training combines the flexibility and adaptability of technology with convenience and accessibility to provide an inclusive learning experience. With advances in technology and increased demand for virtual learning and training opportunities, the sky truly is the limit for remote learning.

Even before the pandemic, “Research and Markets” forecast the online education market as $350 Billion by 2025, so the numbers might be updated after analysing the growth impacts of COVID-19 on the online learning market.

Currently, there is a huge demand from people to learn online. The reason for this demand and rapid growth of the market with a wide variety of platform options for different groups of people may be the rapid change in the world. These days there is no question about it, learners need digital! Organisations have to make the switch, often to survive.

Our new e-learning platform, Pharmuni aims to provide the following;

  • We will provide students entering the Life Sciences Industry with high-quality, cost-effective and flexible solutions that can bridge the skills and knowledge gap. Through accessible education, we wish to facilitate life-changing job opportunities for students and provide them with the certified qualifications they need to rise above the competition in this highly competitive industry.
  • We will provide opportunities for corporate companies to use the B2B model to enable them to tap into our resources in order to provide their employees with up-to-date knowledge. Without lifelong learning, it is impossible to stay on top of the challenges of the digital era and digital technologies are what provide the tools for education and training in a company. E-learning is gaining more and more momentum in the corporate world, but there is still untapped potential for digital learning.

Roadmap 

Over the next 5 to 10 years, we hope to have achieved the following;
